Why Freewill Advocates of Midland is Growing
Every organization reaches moments that invite reflection.
This is one of those moments for Freewill Advocates of Midland.
For years, people have known us through our work of meeting practical needs. We have helped families facing hardship, partnered with agencies across Midland, and worked every day to build community together.
At the same time, many of you have followed another journey of mine—researching Midland's history, writing From Loftin to Legacy, documenting the stories of George Washington Carver School, preserving photographs, tracing family histories, and sharing the remarkable lives of the people who built our city.
For a long time, these seemed like two separate paths. One was nonprofit work. The other was historical research. Then something beautiful happened.
I realized they were never separate.
Every time we preserve a family's story, we strengthen that family. Every time a child learns about the people who came before them, they discover that they belong to something larger than themselves. Every time a community remembers its past, it becomes better equipped to shape its future.
History builds community.
Education builds community.
Leadership builds community.
Acts of compassion build community.
They all belong together.
That realization has led us to introduce what we now call the FAM Community Framework.
It is built on four simple ideas:
Building Community Together by serving individuals and families.
Preserving Community Together by protecting Midland's stories and heritage.
Learning Community Together by investing in education and lifelong learning.
Leading Community Together by developing servant leaders for the future.
These are not four different missions. They are four ways of living out one mission.
As we move forward, I invite you to walk alongside us.
Whether you volunteer, become a FAMbassador, share your family's history, participate in our educational programs, or simply encourage our work,
you become part of this story.
Together, we can build a community that serves today's needs, remembers yesterday's lessons, prepares tomorrow's leaders,
and leaves a lasting legacy for generations to come.
Thank you for continuing this journey with us.
